Budgam, February 16,2026- The historic village of Kanihama in Budgam district has been developed as a Model Craft Village, aimed at preserving and promoting Kashmir’s centuries-old handicraft traditions.
With an investment of over ₹3 crore, significant infrastructure upgrades have been carried out to enhance artisan facilities and improve the visitor experience. The initiative seeks to strengthen the rural craft economy while safeguarding the region’s rich cultural heritage.
Infrastructure Boost for Artisans
The development works include improved internal roads, construction of artisan sheds, and upgraded public facilities. These measures are designed to provide a better working environment for craftsmen and ensure smoother access for tourists and buyers visiting the village.
Kanihama is globally renowned for its exquisite Kani shawls, a traditional weaving craft that represents the artistic finesse of Kashmiri artisans. By establishing the village as a model craft hub, authorities aim to provide direct market linkages and sustainable livelihood opportunities to local weavers.
