Ganderbal, Feburary 14,2026: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a formal avalanche warning for the higher reaches of Ganderbal district, cautioning residents, tourists and transporters against venturing into snow-bound and avalanche-prone areas.
According to the IMD advisory, recent heavy snowfall combined with unstable snow accumulation has significantly increased the risk of avalanches in elevated regions, particularly in upper belts and mountainous stretches. Authorities have warned that the situation may remain hazardous until weather conditions stabilise.
Public Advised to Avoid High-Altitude Travel
The district administration has urged the general public to strictly avoid unnecessary travel to higher reaches and vulnerable zones until the weather improves and the avalanche warning is officially withdrawn by competent authorities. People residing in remote and high-altitude villages have also been advised to remain alert and follow safety protocols.
Officials stressed that ignoring advisories can pose serious risks to life and property, especially in areas historically prone to avalanches during peak winter conditions.
Police Share Dedicated Helpline Numbers
In response to the warning, Ganderbal Police has activated emergency response mechanisms and shared dedicated helpline numbers to ensure immediate assistance in case of any untoward incident.
Citizens have been requested to immediately contact the following numbers during emergencies:
- ERSS Dial 112
- Police Control Room (PCR) Ganderbal: 9906668731, 9419371774, 9541786731
- Landline Numbers: 01942416478, 01942416564
Police officials stated that rapid response teams remain on standby and coordination with other emergency agencies has been strengthened to handle any situation arising from adverse weather conditions.
Administration Urges Vigilance
The administration reiterated that public safety remains its top priority and appealed to citizens to remain vigilant, monitor official weather updates and avoid risky movement in vulnerable areas. Tourists planning visits to snow-covered destinations in Ganderbal have also been advised to postpone travel plans until further notice.
With winter conditions continuing across the Valley, authorities have called for community cooperation to prevent accidents and ensure timely response in case of emergencies.
