Kupwara, February 5,2026-More than 300 passengers stranded in around 35 vehicles were successfully rescued by the Indian Army after heavy snowfall blocked the Karnah–Kupwara road at Sadna Top late last night, officials said.
The rescue operation was carried out by Beacon 109 RCC in coordination with the Indian Army and local police, after sudden snowfall led to poor visibility and slippery road conditions, leaving dozens of vehicles stranded at the high-altitude Sadna Pass.
Despite harsh weather and sub-zero temperatures, rescue teams worked through the night to ensure the safe evacuation of all stranded travellers. The passengers were escorted in a controlled convoy and safely moved to Tangdhar, where temporary arrangements were made for their safety and shelter.
Officials praised the swift response and coordination among the Army, road construction agencies, and police, which helped avert a major crisis in the remote border area.
Authorities have advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel on mountain roads during adverse weather and to follow advisories issued by the district administration, as further snowfall is forecast in higher reaches of Kupwara.
