Kashmir, January 22,2026-The Centre has sanctioned road construction and upgradation projects spanning over 10,000 kilometres for Jammu and Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Sikkim under Phase IV of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-IV), aimed at strengthening rural connectivity across remote and underserved regions.
The approval forms part of the government’s broader push to ensure last-mile road connectivity, improve access to essential services, and boost socio-economic development in hilly, tribal, border, and difficult terrains. Under PMGSY-IV, focus is being laid on upgrading existing rural roads to enhance durability, safety, and all-weather connectivity.
Officials said the sanctioned projects will significantly benefit rural populations by improving access to markets, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and government services. In border and mountainous regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Sikkim, improved road infrastructure is also expected to enhance strategic mobility and disaster response capabilities.
The road works will be executed in a time-bound manner, with strict quality monitoring through digital platforms, geo-tagging, and third-party inspections to ensure transparency and accountability. The projects are also expected to generate substantial employment opportunities at the local level during the construction phase.
PMGSY-IV represents the next phase of the flagship rural roads programme, building on the achievements of earlier phases by prioritising climate-resilient infrastructure, road safety features, and long-term maintenance planning.
