Pulwama, January 15,2026-The PM Vishwakarma Yojana is emerging as a transformative initiative for traditional artisans in Pulwama district, providing vital support through skill development, financial assistance and self-employment opportunities. The scheme aims to strengthen traditional crafts while ensuring sustainable livelihoods for craftsmen across the region.
Jammu and Kashmir became the first Union Territory in the country to implement the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, setting an example in promoting artisan welfare and preserving age-old skills. Under the scheme, artisans receive training, modern tools, credit support and market linkage, enabling them to enhance productivity and improve the quality of their work.
Beneficiaries have reported tangible improvements in their livelihoods. Mushtaq Ahmad, a craftsman from Inder village in Pulwama, said that both his output and income have doubled since joining the scheme. “The training and financial support have helped me improve my skills and expand my work,” he said, describing the initiative as a turning point for traditional artisans.
Officials said the scheme not only empowers craftsmen economically but also plays a crucial role in preserving traditional arts and crafts that are an integral part of Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural heritage. By promoting self-employment and entrepreneurship, the PM Vishwakarma Yojana is helping artisans achieve financial stability and dignity of labour.
The initiative has been widely welcomed by the artisan community, with many viewing it as a strong step towards inclusive growth, cultural preservation and long-term economic sustainability in rural areas.
