J&K Power Minister sets ambitious targets to accelerate Hydel Projects

Kashmir, January 6,2026- The Power Minister on Monday set clear targets for the timely execution of hydroelectric (hydel) projects in Jammu and Kashmir, stressing the need to accelerate work to strengthen the region’s power infrastructure and ensure energy self-sufficiency.

Chairing a high-level review meeting of the Power Development Department and allied agencies, the Minister assessed the progress of ongoing hydel projects and directed officials to adhere strictly to timelines. Emphasis was laid on resolving land acquisition issues, expediting clearances, and improving coordination among departments to avoid delays.

The Minister said that hydropower remains a key pillar of Jammu and Kashmir’s energy potential and is critical for meeting rising electricity demand, especially during peak winter months. He also underlined the importance of modern technology and efficient project management to enhance generation capacity and reduce transmission losses.

Officials briefed the Minister on project-wise status, challenges, and future plans. The Minister instructed them to ensure transparency, regular monitoring, and quality control while executing projects, adding that renewable energy development must go hand in hand with environmental safeguards.

The government, he said, is committed to harnessing J&K’s vast hydropower resources to boost economic growth, create employment opportunities, and provide reliable power supply to consumers across urban and rural areas.
