Kashmir Ahead

First snowfall covers Bhaderwah heights, tourism hopes rise

Bhaderwah, January 2, 2026:After a prolonged dry spell, the much-awaited first snowfall of the season finally arrived in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir’s picturesque Bhaderwah valley on Thursday afternoon, ushering in joy among tourists and local residents alike.

Light snowfall was recorded in higher altitudes of the valley, marking the first snowfall of 2026 and ending weeks of anticipation. Jubilant tourists were seen celebrating as delicate white flakes transformed the landscape, calling it a “gift from nature” on the very first day of the New Year.

Local residents expressed visible relief and optimism, stating that the much-needed snowfall is expected to revive winter tourism in the region, which had taken a severe hit due to the unusually dry conditions this season. Hoteliers, tour operators, and shopkeepers believe that the fresh snowfall will attract visitors in the coming days, boosting the local economy.

“This snowfall is extremely important for tourism and livelihoods. We were worried as January had arrived without snow, but this has renewed hope,” said a local hotel owner.

Apart from tourism, the snowfall is also expected to benefit agriculture and water resources, replenishing natural reserves and supporting the region’s ecological balance.

Bhaderwah, often referred to as the “Mini Kashmir” of Jammu, is known for its scenic beauty and winter charm. Authorities have advised tourists to remain cautious while traveling to higher reaches, as weather conditions may change rapidly.
