Rajouri, January 2,2026-In the border district of Rajouri, locals in the Sundarbani area are increasingly turning to organic farming, transforming it into both an environmental success and a vital economic driver for the region.
Meenu, a local farmer, shared her experience, highlighting the challenges and resilience behind organic cultivation. “We grow organic vegetables on our farm. Currently, we are growing cauliflower, radish and other vegetables. Our produce depends on how hard we work,” she said.
Recalling the hardships faced during summer, Meenu added that the lack of water supply posed a serious challenge. “During the summer, there was no water supply, so we had to carry water on our heads to irrigate our crops. Now we have a water supply, which has made things easier,” she said, describing farming as the family’s only source of income.
Like many households in the area, Meenu’s entire family is involved in farming activities, reflecting the collective effort that sustains rural livelihoods in the border belt. Improved access to basic infrastructure such as water supply has further strengthened farming prospects.
Officials and locals alike say the shift towards organic farming is not only promoting sustainable agriculture but also improving income opportunities for families in Rajouri. The growing demand for chemical-free produce is helping farmers secure better market value while preserving soil health and the local ecosystem.
The success of organic farming in Sundarbani is being seen as a model for rural self-reliance, offering hope for economic stability and sustainable development in border areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
