Srinagar, December 30,2025-In a significant conservation success, the population of the endangered Hangul has recorded a notable increase in Kashmir, offering renewed hope for the survival of the rare species endemic to the region.
Officials from the Wildlife Department said sustained conservation efforts, habitat protection, and strict anti-poaching measures have contributed to the positive trend. The Dachigam National Park, the last viable habitat of the Hangul, has witnessed improved monitoring and scientific management, leading to better breeding conditions.
According to wildlife authorities, regular population censuses, community participation, and awareness campaigns have played a crucial role in stabilising and gradually increasing Hangul numbers. Initiatives under the Hangul Recovery Programme have focused on minimising human-wildlife conflict, restoring forest corridors, and strengthening surveillance.
“The increase in Hangul population reflects the success of focused conservation strategies and inter-departmental coordination. Continued protection and public support are vital to ensure long-term sustainability of this iconic species,” an official said.
Conservationists have welcomed the development, stating that the revival of the Hangul population is not only critical for biodiversity but also symbolic of Kashmir’s rich ecological heritage. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening conservation measures to secure the future of the endangered species.
