Srinagar, December 28,2025 — The intense cold wave of Chillai Kalan tightened its grip on Kashmir as Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of –3.8°C, plunging the Valley into icy conditions. The prolonged cold spell has frozen water bodies in several areas and disrupted normal daily life.
The Meteorological Department has forecast more snowfall from today, raising the likelihood of further temperature dips across the region. Higher reaches are expected to receive moderate to heavy snow, while light snowfall or rain-snow mix is likely in plains.
Authorities have advised commuters and tourists to exercise caution, particularly on snow-bound roads and mountain passes, while essential services remain on alert to tackle weather-related challenges.
Chillai Kalan, the harshest 40-day winter period in Kashmir, is known for extreme cold and frequent snowfall, often shaping the Valley’s winter landscape and water resources.
