Anantnag, December 22,2025:In a landmark development for Kashmir’s food security and logistics infrastructure, a Food Corporation of India (FCI) food-grain freight train successfully reached the Anantnag Goods Terminal, marking a historic first for the region.
The freight train carried 1,384 tonnes of rice from Punjab, significantly strengthening the supply chain mechanism and ensuring smoother availability of essential food grains in the Valley. Officials said more such rakes are scheduled to arrive in the coming days, further streamlining food-grain transportation.
The arrival of the freight train at Anantnag is being hailed as a major milestone, as it reduces dependency on long road convoys, cuts transportation time, lowers costs, and minimises logistical challenges—especially during adverse weather conditions.
“This is a transformative step for Kashmir’s public distribution and food management system. Direct rail connectivity for food grains will save time, resources, and ensure timely availability,” an official said.
The development is expected to enhance the efficiency of the Public Distribution System (PDS) and strengthen preparedness during emergencies, including harsh winters and natural disruptions.
Local administration and officials from FCI and the Railways termed the moment as a game-changer for south Kashmir, noting that the operationalisation of the Anantnag Goods Terminal will boost regional logistics, trade movement, and overall economic activity.
Residents and stakeholders welcomed the move, calling it a long-awaited step towards integrating Kashmir more closely with the national freight network.
The successful arrival of the food-grain rake underscores the government’s focus on improving infrastructure, connectivity, and food security in Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring reliable and efficient delivery of essential commodities to the people.
