Kashmir, December 17,2025-The Handicrafts and Handloom Department on Tuesday flagged off a group of local artisans to participate in the GI Mahotsav being held in New Delhi, aimed at promoting Geographical Indication (GI)–tagged products and providing national exposure to traditional crafts.
Officials said the participation of artisans from Jammu and Kashmir will help showcase the region’s rich handicrafts and handloom heritage, including GI-tagged crafts, on a national platform. The event is expected to connect artisans directly with buyers, designers, exporters and policymakers, thereby strengthening market linkages and enhancing income opportunities.
The department said the initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to preserve traditional skills, encourage craft-based livelihoods, and boost the export potential of indigenous products. Artisans will demonstrate live craft techniques and display their products during the Mahotsav, highlighting the uniqueness and authenticity of GI-certified items.
Officials added that participation in GI Mahotsav will also create awareness about the importance of GI registration in protecting traditional knowledge and preventing misuse of regional crafts. The department reiterated its commitment to supporting artisans through capacity building, marketing support and institutional assistance.
The GI Mahotsav in New Delhi is being organised to celebrate India’s diverse GI products and provide a dedicated platform for artisans and producers to reach wider markets.
