Jammu, December 11, 2025: Jammu and Kashmir is experiencing an 86% rainfall deficit this season due to a prolonged dry spell, according to the India Meteorological Department .
The low rainfall is affecting farmers and agriculture, especially rabi crops like wheat and mustard. Soil moisture is decreasing, which may reduce crop yields in the coming months.
Meteorologists say the dry conditions are caused by a high-pressure system over northern India and fewer western disturbances, which normally bring winter rains to the region. Some light rains are expected in isolated areas over the next week, but overall rainfall remains well below normal.
The J&K government has advised water conservation and better irrigation practices to help farmers cope with the shortage. Authorities are also monitoring water reservoirs and rivers to manage supply for drinking and agriculture.
If the dry spell continues, agriculture and daily life in many areas may face challenges. Citizens and farmers are encouraged to follow weather updates and take measures to save water.
