Kashmir Ahead

CS Atal Dulloo pushes for more medical seats

Kashmir, December 10, 2025:Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo conducted a high-level review of the expansion of medical education seats across Jammu and Kashmir, emphasising the need to increase availability of MBBS, MD/MS, DNB, and DM/MCh seats in the region.

During the meeting, officials from Government Medical Colleges (GMCs), Dental Colleges, Ayurvedic, and Unani Colleges were instructed to fast-track proposals for additional seats and ensure timely submission as soon as the National Medical Commission (NMC) portal opens for applications.

Special attention was given to SKIMS (Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences), which was advised to apply for a major increase in both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) seats for the upcoming academic session.

The move is part of the Union Territory’s ongoing effort to strengthen medical education infrastructure, address the shortage of healthcare professionals, and ensure more students have access to quality medical training within the region. Officials noted that increasing medical seats would also improve research opportunities and specialty healthcare services in J&K.

Chief Secretary Dulloo reiterated that all medical institutions should coordinate closely with the NMC and submit proposals promptly to meet the deadlines, ensuring that the expansion of medical education benefits both students and the healthcare system.
