Aerosol Winter School 2025: LG Manoj Sinha Calls for Strong Climate & Air Quality Action I am delighted to have had the opportunity to be present among you at all three Aerosol Winter Schools. This year’s theme is atmospheric aerosols, clouds and climate science. I believe that researchers and scholars have played a vital role in advancing scientific knowledge and research skills related to aerosol cloud-climate interactions, said the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Shri Manoj Sinha attending 3rd Aerosol Winter School in J&K. I would like to congratulate the Central University of Jammu, which has established the Himalayan High Altitude Atmospheric and Climate Research Centre in Udhampur in collaboration with the Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Swiss National Foundation, which will ensure accurate climate and weather forecasting. It will monitor air quality and also research atmospheric processes at high altitudes, LG said. And we can study aerosol-cloud interactions and their impact on cloud formation and rainfall. I am confident that this initiative will emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration along with focused themes. And we will be able to build a strong scientific foundation in the coming days to face the challenges related to climate change. You all know that this year Jammu and Kashmir had to face a terrible natural disaster for more than a month. Infrastructure was damaged and we lost many precious lives. Cloudbursts and the resulting flash floods in several districts not only disrupted life but the uncertainty of the climate has also necessitated a fresh look at forecasting an emergency response and making changes accordingly. There is a strong need, LG spoke. A big challenge lies ahead for all of us. In such a situation, a huge responsibility has fallen on the scientists, scholars, technology experts and those involved in aerosol research to continuously conduct new research on pollution linear studies and how we can work to improve cloud burst alerts as well. Today, we stand at fifth place in worst air quality country ranking. Air quality in cities like Delhi is becoming toxic. And every year more than eight million deaths occur worldwide due to air pollution. In such a situation, how can we develop sophisticated instruments and models for monitoring and detecting aerosol storms? Will we be able to make it work, LG asked? Also, looking at the situation in cities like Delhi, will we be able to focus on a thorough study of health and environment and its impact and adverse effects? The new generation needs to be especially kind and compassionate towards the environment. Improving society and nation begins with compassion and duty. Therefore, it is everyone’s moral responsibility to understand their responsibilities towards the Earth and show kindness towards environmental resources. The Lieutenant Governor heartily welcomed all the experts and hoped that in the coming days they will discuss his suggestions and find a practical way out.
