Srinagar, 28 November 2025 — The remarkable story of Naik/Nk Nazir Ahmed Wani, the only Kashmiri to be awarded the Ashok Chakra, is finally being shared with the world. Once associated with terrorism, Wani transformed his life to join the Indian Army’s JAKLI Regiment, ultimately making the supreme sacrifice seven years ago while fighting terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir.
Wani’s extraordinary journey from insurgent to decorated soldier is chronicled in the new book, A General Reminisces: Life Under Fire in Kashmir, authored by Lt. Gen. Vijay Oberoi (Retd.). The book provides an intimate look at his life, courage, and the challenges he faced in the conflict-ridden valleys of Kashmir.
“His story is one of redemption, bravery, and patriotism,” said Lt. Gen. Oberoi. “Nazir Ahmed Wani not only gave his life for the nation but also became a symbol of hope for many youths in Kashmir who are seeking a path away from violence.”
Naik Wani joined the Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry after leaving the path of militancy. His exemplary service, valour, and dedication during counter-terror operations earned him the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award. His sacrifice has been celebrated nationwide as a testament to courage and the transformative power of guidance and opportunity.
The book highlights Wani’s journey from a life of conflict to becoming a national hero, emphasising themes of patriotism, resilience, and the ability to choose the right path despite difficult circumstances. It also sheds light on the broader narrative of peacebuilding in Jammu & Kashmir, showing how individual courage can inspire generations.
