Kashmir, November 21,2025- The Government of India has approved an increase in the number of person-days under the MGNREGA scheme to 150 days for the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, marking a significant boost to rural employment and livelihood generation across the region.
The enhancement, aimed at strengthening rural development, is expected to benefit thousands of households by providing additional wage employment during crucial agricultural and non-agricultural seasons. Officials said the move will help address seasonal unemployment and support vulnerable families in remote and rural belts of the UT.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his gratitude to the Government of India for the approval, stating that the decision reflects the Centre’s commitment to improving the socioeconomic landscape of Jammu & Kashmir. He added that the increased workdays under MGNREGA will further empower rural communities and contribute to sustainable development at the grassroots level.
The UT administration is expected to issue detailed guidelines to district authorities for effective implementation of the enhanced provisions under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
The decision comes at a time when J&K is witnessing accelerated rural infrastructure development, with MGNREGA playing a pivotal role in generating employment and improving livelihood security across villages.
