Srinagar, 13 November,2025: The mercury in Srinagar plunged to minus 2.1°C last night, marking the coldest night of the season so far as Kashmir continues to reel under an intense cold wave. The sharp dip in temperature led to the formation of a thin layer of frost on vehicles and rooftops, signalling the early onset of winter chill in the Valley.
According to the Meteorological Department (MeT), the minimum temperature in Srinagar dropped significantly from the previous night’s 0.5°C. The officials said that the temperature is likely to dip further in the coming days, with dry and clear weather expected to prevail across most parts of the Kashmir Valley.
In other parts of the region, Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 4.6°C, while Gulmarg, the famous ski resort, shivered at minus 3.4°C. The MeT office said that this temperature pattern is typical ahead of the onset of ‘Chillai Kalan’, the 40-day harsh winter period that begins in late December.
Locals have begun preparing for the cold spell by stocking up on firewood, kangris (traditional fire pots), and winter essentials. Early morning commuters also faced difficulties as icy conditions made travel on several routes slippery.
The MeT Department has advised residents and tourists to take precautions against cold-related ailments and to check weather updates before travelling to higher reaches.
