Kashmir, October 7, 2025: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for by-elections to the Budgam and Nagrota assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, with polling set for November 11 and vote counting on November 14. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar made the announcement during a press conference, noting that these bypolls are part of elections in eight constituencies across seven states and union territories, coinciding with Bihar’s assembly polls.
The Budgam seat became vacant after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah retained Ganderbal and vacated it following the 2024 assembly elections. Nagrota fell vacant due to the death of BJP MLA Devender Singh Rana on October 31, 2024. Political parties in J&K, including the National Conference, BJP, and PDP, welcomed the announcement, with NC stating it would finally provide representation to Budgam residents. The ECI emphasized adherence to electoral guidelines, with parties urged to ensure fair campaigning. This move addresses the year-long vacancy in these seats, promoting democratic representation in the region.
