Kathua, 26 September 2025: In a major step towards promoting sustainable cultivation and boosting the rural economy, the Department of Horticulture Jammu has announced the establishment of a Government Bamboo Nursery at Nagri, Parole, Kathua under the National Bamboo Mission (NBM).
Officials said the initiative is aimed at encouraging farmers to adopt bamboo cultivation as a profitable venture, given its multiple uses in construction, furniture, handicrafts, paper, and bio-energy industries. The nursery will provide high-quality planting material to farmers, ensuring the availability of improved bamboo varieties across the region.
The Bamboo Mission in Kathua is also expected to generate livelihood opportunities for local communities, strengthen the value chain, and promote eco-friendly practices. Experts highlight that bamboo, often called “green gold,” has immense potential in Jammu and Kashmir’s horticulture sector, especially in regions with suitable agro-climatic conditions.
Speaking about the project, horticulture officials emphasised that the government is committed to diversifying agriculture, introducing alternative crops, and creating market linkages for farmers. The nursery at Nagri will not only serve Kathua district but also benefit adjoining areas by acting as a resource hub for bamboo development.
The establishment of the Government Bamboo Nursery at Nagri, Parole marks a significant milestone in achieving the objectives of the National Bamboo Mission, aligning with the larger vision of sustainable agriculture and rural development in Jammu and Kashmir.
