Srinagar, September 23,2025: In a major boost to the horticulture sector, over 1.3 lakh metric tonnes of fresh fruit have been transported from the Kashmir Valley to different parts of the country in just the last 10 days, officials said on Tuesday.
According to the Traffic Department, nearly 4,500 trucks and load carriers carrying apples and other fruits are moving out of the Valley every day as part of the ongoing fruit season. The officials added that traffic manaagement on the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway has been streamlined to ensure hassle-free movement of fruit-laden vehicles.
The Horticulture Department informed that this year’s fruit season is witnessing a steady demand from markets across India, with growers optimistic about better prices. Apple, pear, and plum are among the major varieties being transported in bulk.
Officials said that special arrangements have been put in place at fruit mandis in Sopore, Shopian, and Pulwama, ensuring smooth loading and dispatch operations. Regular coordination meetings between the Horticulture, Transport, and Traffic Police departments are being held to prevent delays and minimise losses to growers.
Growers and traders have welcomed the government’s proactive measures, stating that uninterrupted transport of fruit consignments is crucial for maintaining quality and fetching competitive rates in national markets like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad.
The horticulture sector, often described as the backbone of Jammu and Kashmir’s rural economy, contributes significantly to livelihood generation, with apples alone accounting for more than 8% of the region’s GDP.
Authorities assured that all possible steps will continue to be taken to facilitate smooth transport during the peak harvest season in the coming weeks.
