India’s 450+ Languages Are Our Greatest Strength: J&K LG Manoj Sinha on Hindi Diwas No country in the world can match the linguistic diversity of India, said the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Shri Manoj Sinha delivering a keynote address at National Seminar on ‘Integration in Indian Languages’ at NIT Srinagar. You all know that 22 official languages, more than 450 languages and hundreds of dialects are the symbols of India’s creativity. It is said that India is a country where the language and water changes as you travel, LG added. Srinagar will also have students speaking many languages. There must be happening an exchange of different cultural ideas among all of them. But if we think, at the level of consciousness, we feel that we will be one. Despite all the diversity, they will remain the same at the emotional level. Despite all these differences, we need to move forward with a common purpose and a common spirit and vision towards nation building in our hearts. We should also understand the essence of Hindi Diwas. Its primary objective is to connect people from different linguistic backgrounds by making Hindi an essential bridge between diversity. A seminal research paper published at Cambridge University in 2016 concluded that linguistic diversity creates communities with shared preferences and strong social networks. And personally, I completely agree with this conclusion, LG remarked. And taking this further, I would like to say that linguistic diversity not only creates better human resources but also helps in promoting economic development. For thousands of years, there is a deep unity among all the languages of India. If you read the famous Dogri poet Kishan Smailpuri, you will definitely find a glimpse of Mirza Ghalib in him. Despite the diversity of language, emotional unity is clearly visible in the creations of Yogini Lalleshwari of Jammu Kashmir and Saint Kabir born in Kashi. This is the symbol of the great and excellent tradition of India. We should see more than 450 languages of the country as the biggest strength of the society and the country, LG stated. Languages are different but when they come together like small rivers, we are able to do the work of building an ocean of nation. These languages inspire us; just as our nation has been united at the level of emotions for thousands of years, we have to carry forward this tradition and use these languages with coordination to build a developed India, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said.
