Srinagar, September 20, 2025 – The city of Srinagar is gearing up to welcome martial arts enthusiasts from across Asia as it hosts the 3rd Junior Asian Pencak Silat Championship from September 25 to 30.
This prestigious event, organised by the Indian Pencak Silat Federation in collaboration with the J&K Sports Council, promises to showcase the power, precision, and passion of Pencak Silat, a traditional Southeast Asian martial art that combines self-defense techniques with artistic expression.
Approximately 300 junior athletes, coaches, and officials from 11 countries are expected to participate in the championship, held at the Sher-i-Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex (SKISC).
The competing nations include India (fielding both A and B teams), Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Nepal, and Kazakhstan.
Athletes will vie for glory in various categories, including Tanding (sparring or fighting) and artistic events such as Tunggal (solo forms), Ganda (duo forms), and Regu (team forms).
Pencak Silat, originating from Indonesia but widely practiced across Asia, emphasizes strikes, joint manipulation, throws, and weaponry, often blending combat with cultural performances. The championship not only highlights athletic prowess but also promotes cultural exchange and sports tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.
Local officials have expressed excitement about the event, noting its potential to inspire young talent in the region.
In preparation, the J&K Sports Council has been actively promoting the event through social media and local announcements, inviting spectators to witness the high-energy competitions.
“Kashmir is waiting to welcome all the athletes and officials,” shared a council representative in a recent post.
This marks a significant milestone for Srinagar, which has seen a surge in hosting international sporting events in recent years.The event aligns with broader efforts to develop Pencak Silat in India, following recent state-level championships that drew over 1,200 participants from Jammu and Kashmir alone.
