Srinagar, September 18, 2025: In a significant step towards enhancing Srinagar’s green cover, Ms. Mandeep Kaur, IAS, Commissioner Secretary, Housing & Urban Development Department (H&UDD), today inaugurated a Mega Plantation Drive under “Sewa Parv 2025” at the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Allochi Bagh, aimed at introducing dense biofencing around all major waste management facilities in the city.
The initiative, organised in collaboration with Self Help Groups (SHGs) and UEED, will extend to four STPs across Srinagar. The drive targets the establishment of two-layered bio fences around each facility, ensuring that over the years, these areas will be surrounded by dense green cover. The plantation effort will focus on native plant species, aiming to strengthen ecological resilience, improve urban air quality, and enhance the aesthetic appeal of neighbourhoods.
The inaugural event saw participation from senior officials, including the MD NULM, CEO Urban Development Agency, SE UEED, officers of Urban Forestry Division SMC, and members of various SHGs.
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Mandeep Kaur highlighted the importance of expanding urban green spaces to mitigate the public nuisance and unpleasant odors associated with waste management facilities. She urged citizens, community groups, and students to actively engage in the plantation drives and embrace the motto: “Ek Paed Maa Ke Naam, Ek Paed Desh Ke Naam.”
The initiative, part of the Sewa Parv 2025 celebrations, reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable urban development, environmental stewardship, and community participation, reinforcing Srinagar’s vision of a cleaner, greener, and healthier city.
