Jammu, September 10, 2025 – Schools across Jammu reopened today, Wednesday, following a nearly two-week closure prompted by heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides that began on August 26. The Directorate of School Education Jammu (DSEJ) announced the resumption of offline classes, signaling a return to normalcy after improved weather conditions and extensive safety preparations. The closure, initially ordered on September 4, affected all government and private schools in the Jammu Division as a precautionary measure due to incessant rains that triggered landslides, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted access roads. The DSEJ mandated school heads to conduct thorough safety and security audits of school premises before resuming classes, ensuring structural integrity and safe learning environments. Chief Education Officers were tasked with monitoring daily activities and submitting detailed compliance reports to the Directorate. The heavy rainfall caused significant damage, with reports indicating over 100 schools affected, some with cracked buildings and damaged furniture.
The Public Works Department is conducting additional safety audits to ensure all government school buildings are secure. The reopening follows a phased approach, with staff reporting on September 8 to prepare facilities, and formal classes resuming today.Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the importance of restoring normalcy, noting the central government’s support, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent visit to assess flood damage. The administration has set up 15 relief camps in Jammu, accommodating over 650 people affected by the floods. The resumption of school operations is a critical step for academic continuity, particularly for students preparing for board and entrance exams, while prioritizing safety amidst ongoing recovery efforts.
