Srinagar, August 31, 2025 – In a significant step towards bridging the gap between academic learning and industrial practices, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has organized an educational industrial visit for students of the National Institute of Technology Srinagar (NITSgr) to the newly established steel plant in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. This initiative aims to provide hands-on exposure to modern steel manufacturing processes, quality standards, and industrial operations, fostering skill development among the region’s young engineers and technologists. The visit, which took place on August 30, 2025, involved over 50 students from various engineering departments at NITSgr, accompanied by faculty members and BIS officials. The group was hosted at the JSW Steel Plant in Lassipora Industrial Area, Pulwama – Jammu and Kashmir’s first major private steel manufacturing facility. Established by the JSW Group with an investment of approximately ₹150 crore, the plant spans 70 kanals of land and focuses on producing high-quality steel products to meet local demand while promoting sustainable industrial growth in the Union Territory.
During the tour, students explored key aspects of steel production, including raw material handling, blast furnace operations, steel melting shops, and quality control mechanisms aligned with BIS certification standards. BIS representatives emphasized the importance of adhering to Indian Standards (IS) for ensuring product safety, reliability, and environmental compliance in the steel sector. “This visit is part of BIS’s ongoing efforts to promote standardization and quality awareness among students, preparing them for the demands of the #AtmaNirbharBharat initiative,” said a senior BIS official involved in the program. The Pulwama steel plant, which laid its foundation stone in February 2023, represents a milestone in J&K’s industrial landscape post the abrogation of Article 370. It not only aims to cater to regional needs but also generate employment opportunities for local youth, contributing to economic stability in south Kashmir. Students interacted with plant engineers, gaining insights into challenges like supply chain management, energy efficiency, and the integration of green technologies in steel production.Prof. Ashok Kumar, Director of NITSgr, commended the collaboration, stating, “Such industrial visits are crucial for our students to understand real-world applications of their coursework. Exposure to facilities like the Pulwama steel plant will equip them with practical knowledge in #IndustrialEngineering, #SteelManufacturing, and #QualityStandards, aligning with the National Education Policy’s emphasis on experiential learning.
“This event underscores BIS’s role in educational outreach, similar to its recent programs in other regions, including training sessions for polytechnic faculty and exposure visits for engineering students. As J&K continues to attract investments under the New Industrial Development Scheme, initiatives like this are expected to boost technical education and industrial synergy in the area. For more details on BIS activities and upcoming programs, visit the official BIS website. NITSgr encourages students to participate in such opportunities to enhance their employability in the growing #ManufacturingSector.
