Srinagar, 24 August ,2025– In a swift response to the intensifying weather conditions, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has directed all relevant departments to remain on high alert as heavy rains continue to lash the region. The advisory comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of potential flash floods, landslides, and disruptions in low-lying areas across the Union Territory.
Urgent Directives Issued
Speaking to reporters after an emergency review meeting at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar, Omar Abdullah emphasised the need for preparedness. “With the monsoon season bringing relentless downpours, we cannot afford any lapses. All departments – from public works to disaster management – must be fully operational 24/7 to ensure public safety,” he stated. The Chief Minister instructed the Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) to coordinate with local administrations in vulnerable districts such as Srinagar, Anantnag, Kupwara, and Jammu.
Key measures include:
- Deployment of rescue teams and machinery in flood-prone zones.
- Monitoring of river levels in the Jhelum and Chenab basins.
- Temporary suspension of traffic on certain highways if conditions worsen.
- Stockpiling of essential supplies like food, medicine, and sandbags.
Weather Forecast and Impacts
The IMD has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours, with isolated thunderstorms expected in the Pir Panjal range. As of Tuesday morning, several parts of the Kashmir Valley recorded over 100 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, leading to water logging in urban areas and minor landslides blocking roads like the Srinagar-Leh highway.
Reports from the ground indicate that schools and colleges in affected areas have been closed, and tourists have been advised to avoid travel. No major casualties have been reported yet, but authorities are on standby for any escalation.
Historical Context and Preparedness
This high alert echoes similar situations in previous years when heavy rains caused significant damage in J&K. Omar Abdullah, who assumed office recently, highlighted the government’s investments in early warning systems and infrastructure upgrades. “We’ve learned from past monsoons; our focus is on proactive response to minimise losses,” he added.
Residents are urged to stay indoors, avoid crossing swollen streams, and report emergencies via the toll-free number 112. The situation is being monitored closely, with updates expected as the weather evolves.
