Srinagar, August 18, 2025: The picturesque tourist destination of Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district experienced the season’s first snowfall on Monday, delighting visitors and signaling an early onset of winter in the Kashmir Valley. The light snowfall, recorded in the higher reaches of Sonamarg, including popular trekking spots like Vishansar and Nichnai, brought a refreshing chill to the region, while the plains saw intermittent rainfall.
A Magical Winter Transformation
The fresh snow adorned the mountain peaks surrounding Sonamarg, enhancing the scenic beauty of this famed health resort. According to locals and tourists, the unexpected snowfall in mid-August added a magical touch to the landscape, attracting adventurers and nature lovers. “We never expected to see snow this early. It feels magical,” said a tourist visiting the area. The Meteorological Department (MeT) reported that the snowfall, coupled with rainfall across Kashmir and parts of Jammu, significantly lowered temperatures, offering relief from the preceding scorching heat.
Weather Details and Regional Impact
The MeT recorded the highest rainfall in Qazigund, with 9.4 mm, followed by 5.4 mm in Kupwara, 4.8 mm in Srinagar, and 4.6 mm in Pahalgam over the past 24 hours. The minimum temperatures dropped notably, with Srinagar recording 14.8°C, Gulmarg at 9.5°C, and Sonamarg dipping to 6.2°C. The weather department forecasts partly cloudy skies with chances of light rain in the higher reaches of Kashmir over the next few days, indicating a continuation of the cool weather pattern.
Tourism Boost and Local Response
The early snowfall has sparked excitement among tourism stakeholders, who anticipate an increase in visitors to Sonamarg, known for its glaciers, trekking routes, and proximity to the Amarnath Yatra base camp. Local hoteliers and tour operators are optimistic, expecting the snow to draw more domestic and international tourists seeking to experience the winter charm of Kashmir. “This early snow is a good sign for the tourism season. We hope it brings more footfall,” said a local tour guide.
The snowfall also holds significance for the region’s water resources, as snow accumulation in the higher reaches contributes to the replenishment of glaciers and rivers. However, authorities have advised trekkers and visitors to exercise caution in the higher altitudes due to slippery conditions and potential weather changes.
Looking Ahead
The MeT department predicts stable weather with occasional light showers in the coming days, particularly in the higher reaches of Sonamarg and Gulmarg. The early snowfall has set the stage for an extended winter tourism season, with Sonamarg poised to remain a prime destination for snow enthusiasts and nature lovers.
