Srinagar, Aug 13, 2025: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced that Jammu and Kashmir has undergone a significant transformation in sports infrastructure over the past five years, fostering a vibrant sports ecosystem that has inspired millions of youth to engage in various sports activities. Speaking at the Bijbehara Premier League match in Anantnag, Sinha highlighted the development of world-class sports facilities across the Union Territory, with plans for further expansion.
“Five years ago, only 2.5 lakh youth participated in sports activities in J&K. Today, that number has surged to 40 lakh, reflecting the energy, talent, and determination of our youth,” Sinha stated. He emphasized that sports events, including national-level tournaments, are now held across the region, enabling young athletes to pursue sports as both a passion and a professional career.
The LG credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s support through the Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP) for upgrading sports infrastructure and introducing a merit-based sports policy.The new sports policy ensures transparent selection for the sports department and council, promoting a drug-free J&K and fostering a peaceful environment through youth participation. Sinha also praised the peaceful conduct of the 2025 Amarnath Yatra, with over 4.14 lakh pilgrims visiting the holy cave, boosting tourism and spreading harmony.Highlighting the revival of international cricket, Sinha noted that the Legends Cricket League returned to J&K last year after a 36-year gap, signaling a new era for sports in the region. “Sports like cricket and volleyball strengthen unity and send a positive message,” he added. The government remains committed to tapping Kashmir’s tourism potential to attract more visitors, further integrating sports and tourism development.
