Srinagar, July 26:The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has welcomed the proposed India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), stating that it holds the potential to significantly enhance the global reach of Jammu and Kashmir’s traditional industries, including handicrafts, handlooms, and agro-based products.
In a statement issued on Friday, KCCI President said that the FTA could open new export avenues for Kashmir’s artisans and small-scale manufacturers, who have long struggled to access international markets due to trade barriers and limited exposure. He emphasised the importance of including J&K’s traditional sectors in the core areas of the agreement to ensure they benefit from tariff reductions and streamlined trade procedures.
“The India-UK FTA can be a game-changer for the economic landscape of Jammu and Kashmir,” the KCCI said, adding that Pashmina, carpets, papier-mâché, and Kashmiri saffron have immense export potential that can be unlocked through fair trade access.
KCCI also urged the central government to provide technical support, training, and branding assistance to local producers so they can meet global standards and demand.
Industry experts believe that a well-negotiated FTA will not only boost exports but also generate employment and revive heritage crafts that are fading due to lack of international demand.
