Srinagar, July 2025 — Jammu and Kashmir has recorded a notable literacy rate of 82% among individuals aged seven years and above, outpacing the national average of 80.9%, according to the Annual Report 2023–24 of the Periodic Labour Force Survey . The report, conducted by the National Sample Survey Office , was presented recently in Parliament.
The information was shared in response to a query by Member of Parliament Janardan Singh Sigriwal in the Lok Sabha, who sought details on the current literacy scenario in India and ongoing government efforts toward achieving 100% literacy across all states and union territories.
The Ministry of Education highlighted that this upward trend in Jammu and Kashmir reflects significant progress, particularly due to enhanced access to education, improved infrastructure, and digital learning initiatives. However, the ministry emphasised that focused literacy interventions remain essential, especially in the areas of adult education and rural outreach, where disparities still persist.
This improvement aligns with the Government of India’s broader mission to promote universal literacy, with a special focus on underserved and marginalized communities. The increase in literacy is also seen as a positive indicator for the region’s overall socio-economic development and educational empowerment.
