Banihal, June 19, 2025: Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, conducted an extensive visit to the Banihal area of Ramban district on Wednesday evening to assess the condition of National Highway-44 (NH-44) and review preparations for the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra (SANJY) 2025, scheduled from July 3 to August 9. Accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Ramban, Mohammad Alyas Khan, SDM Banihal Mohammad Naseeb, SDM Ramsoo, and senior officers from various line departments, Kumar focused on ensuring robust infrastructure and security arrangements for the upcoming Hindu pilgrimage to the Amarnath Cave Shrine.
NH-44 Maintenance and Yatra Arrangements
During the visit, Kumar inspected key yatra camp sites, including the Lamber Ground in Banihal, and langar facilities along the NH-44 stretch from Nashri to Banihal. He directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to deploy additional manpower and machinery to clear debris, improve road shoulders, and blacktop critical sections to ensure smooth vehicular movement during the yatra. Specific instructions were issued for the speedy completion of the Canopy (Cut and Cover) Tunnel at Mehar–Cafeteria Morh to minimise traffic congestion, a critical factor for pilgrim convoys.
Comprehensive Yatra Preparations
Kumar reviewed arrangements for civic amenities, including power, water, sanitation, and medical facilities at lodgement centers and langar sites. He instructed the Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL) to ensure uninterrupted power supply and maintain emergency generators at strategic locations. The Health Department was directed to stock medical supplies and position ambulances along the yatra route for prompt emergency response. Additionally, Kumar emphasised effective traffic regulation on NH-44 to prevent congestion and facilitate seamless pilgrim movement, with the Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) tasked to arrange standby buses for any vehicle breakdowns.
Security and Interdepartmental Coordination
Security arrangements were a key focus, with Kumar stressing the need for meticulous planning and coordination among the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board (SASB), police, and other agencies. He reviewed the deployment of RFID counters, registration centers, and sanitation facilities to ensure pilgrim safety and convenience. The Divisional Commissioner also directed the district administration to publicise cut-off timings for travel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, applicable to both pilgrims and tourists during the yatra period.
Commitment to a Safe Pilgrimage
“The Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra is a sacred journey, and we are committed to ensuring a safe and hassle-free experience for all devotees,” Kumar stated during the inspection. His visit underscores the administration’s proactive approach to addressing logistical and security challenges, particularly in light of the recent Pahalgam terror attack, which has prompted heightened vigilance under ‘Operation Shiva.’
