SRINAGAR, June 12, 2025 — Kashmir took a bold step toward reviving its tourism industry with a vibrant Shikara Ride Show on the serene Dal Lake, organized by students of the Aryans Group of Colleges, Chandigarh, on June 11. The event sent a powerful message to the world: Kashmir is safe, welcoming, and ready to embrace tourists once again. Flagged off by Education Minister Sakina Itoo and attended by Director School Education Kashmir, Dr. G.N. War, the show highlighted the region’s beauty and resilience.
The sixth Aryans Shikara Race came as a response to the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives and led to widespread cancellations in the tourism sector. “This event is a celebration of Kashmir’s peace and hospitality,” said Itoo, applauding the students for promoting the Valley’s tourism potential. She praised the Aryans Group for supporting Kashmiri students studying outside the region and organizing special exams post-attack to ensure their academic continuity.
Colorful shikaras glided across Dal Lake, adorned with messages of unity and hope, captivating locals, tourists, and dignitaries, including Aryans Group Chairman Dr. Anshu Kataria. “Kashmir remains a paradise, undeterred by challenges,” Kataria said, emphasizing the event’s role in rebuilding confidence. Dr. War highlighted the youth’s contribution to crafting a positive narrative for the region, fostering optimism among visitors.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, a key advocate for tourism revival, endorsed the event as part of efforts to enhance visitor experiences. “We want every tourist to leave Kashmir with unforgettable memories,” Abdullah stated, noting ongoing initiatives like infrastructure upgrades and robust safety measures. The Shikara Show complements campaigns to promote lesser-known destinations like Nagwari in Kupwara and boost border tourism in areas such as Uri and Gurez.
The event underscored tourism’s economic impact, uplifting shikara wallas, houseboat owners, and local businesses while creating opportunities for Kashmiri youth. Itoo emphasized the spirit of communal harmony, with locals warmly supporting visitors, reflecting Kashmir’s cultural ethos. The Aryans Group’s past innovations, including the “Shikara App” and “Solar Boat,” demonstrate their commitment to the Valley’s progress.
With preparations underway for the Amarnath Yatra 2025, supported by stringent security, the Shikara Show marks a turning point for Kashmir’s tourism. Having welcomed 3.5 million visitors in 2024, contributing 7% to J&K’s GDP, the region is poised to reclaim its status as a global tourism hub, inviting travellers to explore its scenic landscapes and warm hospitality.
