Srinagar, June 10, 2025: In a transformative development for rural Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha expressed heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji and Hon’ble Union Minister of Rural Development Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan Ji for sanctioning 316 road projects under Batch-I of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana . With an estimated cost of Rs. 4,224 crore, this package is the largest-ever sanctioned for J&K under PMGSY and positions the Union Territory as the first among all States and UTs to receive approval under PMGSY-IV.
Spanning 1,781 kilometers, the approved road projects will provide all-weather connectivity to 390 eligible habitations, significantly enhancing rural infrastructure. LG Manoj Sinha emphasized the transformative potential of this initiative, stating, “This historic sanction will revolutionize rural connectivity in J&K, connecting far-flung areas to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities. It will usher in a new era of prosperity and opportunity for our rural communities.”
The PMGSY-IV scheme, aimed at bridging connectivity gaps in rural India, prioritises unconnected habitations with populations above 250 in plains and 100 in special category regions like J&K. This package is poised to boost socio-economic growth by improving access to essential services and fostering economic opportunities in remote areas. J&K’s Public Works Department has assured that the projects will meet high-quality standards, ensuring durable and safe infrastructure.
Building on the success of previous PMGSY phases, which connected over 19,324.72 km of roads and 217 bridges in J&K since 2001, this sanction marks a milestone in the region’s development journey. Surveys are already underway to identify additional unconnected habitations under PMGSY-IV, signaling a sustained focus on rural upliftment.
This landmark initiative reflects the Central Government’s commitment to inclusive development in Jammu and Kashmir, paving the way for enhanced connectivity and prosperity in its rural heartlands.
