Srinagar, May 16, 2025: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the centrality of the people in his government’s mission during a public address in Srinagar on May 15, 2025, stating, “People are the strength of this government, and responsive governance is their rightful expectation.” The statement, made amid ongoing efforts to address the economic fallout from the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, underscores Abdullah’s commitment to delivering effective governance to meet public expectations and restore stability in the region.
Speaking to a gathering of citizens, stakeholders, and media, Abdullah outlined his administration’s dedication to prioritizing public welfare, particularly in reviving the tourism sector, which has been severely impacted by the attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists. The incident led to a 90% cancellation rate in tourist bookings and a decline in registrations for the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, scheduled from July 3 to August 9, 2025. Abdullah reiterated that his government is actively engaging with tourism stakeholders to develop a comprehensive revival plan, incorporating measures such as loan deferments for small-scale entrepreneurs, reintroduction of cultural performances, and new tourist attractions to rebuild Kashmir’s image as a safe destination.
Abdullah highlighted the importance of responsive governance in addressing the challenges faced by hoteliers, houseboat operators, and tourist taxi drivers, who are struggling with financial burdens. He announced that the Tourism Department would formulate a structured strategy post-Yatra, backed by a proposed Central government relief package that includes financial aid and interest relief. The Chief Minister also emphasized the Amarnath Yatra’s role in projecting peace, with enhanced security measures, including 150,000 personnel and advanced surveillance, planned for the Pahalgam and Baltal routes to ensure pilgrim safety.
The address resonated with the public, with attendees and social media users on X praising Abdullah’s focus on people-centric governance. The Chief Minister’s commitment to incorporating public and stakeholder feedback was evident in his recent meeting with tourism stakeholders, where he assured collaboration on long-term resilience strategies. As Jammu and Kashmir prepares for the 2025 Yatra, with infrastructure upgrades underway, Abdullah’s government aims to restore economic vitality and public trust through responsive and inclusive governance.
