Srinagar, May 16, 2025: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah convened a vital meeting with tourism stakeholders in Srinagar on May 15, 2025, to tackle the mounting concerns within the tourism industry following the devastating Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which killed 26 people, predominantly tourists. The attack has led to a staggering 90% cancellation rate in tourist bookings and a sharp decline in registrations for the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, set to take place from July 3 to August 9, 2025. Abdullah assured stakeholders of his government’s full commitment to revitalizing the sector, emphasizing that their valuable suggestions would shape a comprehensive recovery plan.
The gathering brought together hoteliers, houseboat operators, tourist taxi drivers, and members of the Hoteliers Association, who voiced their struggles amid the economic downturn triggered by the attack. Abdullah outlined a forward-looking approach, announcing that the Tourism Department would craft a detailed revival strategy after the Amarnath Yatra concludes. Among the proposed measures were loan deferments for at least two quarters to ease the financial burden on small-scale businesses grappling with fixed costs and workforce retention. To reinvigorate tourism, he suggested reviving cultural performances by local artists, resuming laser fountain shows, and introducing new attractions to entice visitors.
Abdullah expressed confidence in restoring Kashmir’s image as a safe and hospitable destination, noting that several organizations and individuals have offered to join promotional campaigns to rebuild trust. He committed to taking an active role in these initiatives and to advocating for a Central government relief package that includes financial assistance and interest relief to support the industry. Highlighting the significance of the Amarnath Yatra, which saw over 512,000 pilgrims in 2024, Abdullah described it as a pivotal moment to project Kashmir’s peaceful spirit. Enhanced security measures along the Pahalgam and Baltal routes, including the deployment of 150,000 security personnel and advanced surveillance systems, are being prioritized to ensure a safe pilgrimage.
The stakeholders responded positively, pledging to work closely with the government on a long-term revival strategy. Social media reactions on X reflected hope, with users commending Abdullah’s hands-on approach and focus on collaboration. As preparations for the 2025 Amarnath Yatra advance, with improvements in infrastructure and sanitation, the government is determined to harness stakeholder insights to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s allure as a top tourist destination.
