Tangdhar, May 13, 2025- Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited Tangdhar in Kupwara district to inspect community bunkers, vital shelters for residents near the Line of Control . “These structures are a lifeline during times of crisis,” Abdullah declared. “We will ensure the construction of more such safe spaces to protect and support our people living in border areas.” His statement reflects a renewed focus on enhancing safety for communities vulnerable to cross-border tensions.
Tangdhar’s proximity to the LoC makes bunkers essential for protecting civilians from shelling and unrest. These reinforced shelters serve as critical refuges during emergencies. During the visit, Abdullah assessed recent damages in the area, promising a swift damage assessment and subsequent relief efforts. “Compensation will follow once the evaluation is complete,” he assured locals.
The Chief Minister also announced plans to explore individual household bunkers, a potential game-changer for border residents. “We will take this up with the central government to provide personalized safe spaces,” he said, signaling a move toward more accessible safety solutions. Such bunkers could allow families to remain secure at home during crises, complementing existing community shelters.
Residents expressed cautious optimism. “Bunkers save lives, but we need more and faster action,” said Rafiq Ahmad, a local. Community leaders urged timely maintenance of current shelters and better access to relief funds. The administration, under Abdullah, is prioritizing border area development, balancing security with socio-economic progress. Collaboration with the central government will be key to securing funds and expertise for the bunker expansion.
The initiative is part of a broader vision to build resilience in Jammu and Kashmir’s frontier regions. Alongside bunkers, investments in healthcare, education, and infrastructure aim to uplift border communities. Challenges like funding and coordination persist, but Abdullah’s proactive approach offers hope for tangible progress.
