Jammu, May 2, 2025 – Heavy rainfall swept across Jammu on Thursday, offering much-needed respite from the region’s intense summer heat. The showers, accompanied by strong winds and lightning, lowered temperatures significantly, providing relief to residents but also prompting alerts due to rising water levels in the Chenab River in the Akhnoor sector.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the rains to an active western disturbance affecting northwest India, with Jammu recording moderate to heavy rainfall. Social media posts on X highlighted the cooling effect, with locals welcoming the break from swelter. However, the rains follow a pattern of extreme weather, as seen in April when torrential rains triggered flash floods and landslides in Ramban, disrupting the Jammu-Srinagar highway.
Authorities are monitoring the situation, advising caution in low-lying areas. The rainfall aligns with ongoing community efforts, such as the army’s medical camp in Tarkundi and Shopian’s sanitation initiatives, reflecting Jammu’s resilience amid environmental challenges.
