The first-ever Kashmir International Marathon has added yet another milestone in the transformation of Jammu and Kashmir as a global sporting destination. In a grand felicitation ceremony today, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha honoured the winners of this prestigious event, which saw over 1700 runners from across India and 12 foreign nations participate in both the 42 km Full Marathon and the 21 km Half Marathon. In his address, LG Shri Manoj Sinha praised the collective efforts of the Tourism Department, J&K Police, Security Forces, Youth Services & Sports Department, and all other stakeholders for ensuring the success of this mega event. “This marathon has put Jammu and Kashmir on the world marathon map,” he stated, calling the event a historic achievement for the region. He expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, whose leadership and focus on restoring peace in the region have made international events in J&K a reality. He emphasised that the marathon, along with recent international events like the G20 Summit, Formula-4 race, and International Yoga Day, symbolises the return of normalcy and global recognition for J&K. He also highlighted the record-breaking tourist arrivals in recent years as proof of the progress and prosperity in J&K, driven by the peaceful environment. To further promote the region, he announced that a similar marathon would soon be organised in Jammu, aiming to bring international athletes and tourists alike to the twin regions. Jammu and Kashmir, with its rich cultural heritage, ideal climate, and scenic landscapes, is steadily gaining prominence as a preferred destination for global sporting events. These signature marathons in Srinagar and Jammu will further boost tourism and establish the region as a hub for international runners and sports enthusiasts. Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty, a guest at the ceremony, expressed his admiration for J&K’s hospitality and natural beauty, predicting that the region would soon become a top global spot for marathons and other international events. He also spoke about the potential for bringing more films to Jammu and Kashmir, encouraged by the warm welcome and picturesque settings.
