J&K LG Manoj Sinha celebrates prestigious recognition and cultural heritage

Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha presided over the Certificate Award Ceremony marking Srinagar’s recognition as a ‘World Craft City’ by the World Crafts Council (WCC). This accolade positions Srinagar as the fourth city in India to receive this prestigious designation. The ceremony was graced by prominent figures including Sa’ad Hani Al-Qaddumi, President of the World Crafts Council, among other distinguished members of the Council. In his address, he extended heartfelt congratulations to the people of Srinagar, artisans, craftspeople, and all associated departments, celebrating the city’s new honor. “We are truly delighted to witness Srinagar being awarded the ‘World Craft City’ certificate. This recognition is a significant honor for this ancient city, renowned for its rich cultural and artistic heritage. It will greatly aid in preserving and promoting the crafts and craftsmanship of Jammu and Kashmir,” he remarked. He lauded the World Crafts Council for its efforts in inspiring and advancing artistic traditions worldwide. He emphasized that the award not only honors Srinagar but also acknowledges the enduring Indian civilization, which has perpetuated creative traditions and recognized the talents of artisans throughout history. “Our aspiration is to see both Jammu and Srinagar become the premier art cities of India. I envision these cities becoming the leading homes for artists and prime destinations for those seeking exceptional art,” he stated. He also highlighted the proactive role of the UT Administration in safeguarding and enhancing Jammu and Kashmir’s unique cultural and artistic heritage. The administration is committed to providing sustainable livelihoods for artisans and craftspeople, ensuring that their work is both financially rewarding and professionally fulfilling. “Jammu and Kashmir is celebrated as the Crown Jewel of India, not only for its geographical beauty but also for its quest for spiritual wisdom and its timeless cultural assets, which are reflected in its diverse creative products,” he noted. He underscored the administration’s ongoing efforts to support the marketing and export of handicrafts and handloom products, as well as the promotion of all craft forms. He affirmed the commitment to training the younger generation of craftspeople to continue these traditional occupations. Commending the work of the Handloom and Handicraft Department and the Industries and Commerce Department, the LG expressed confidence that the ‘World Craft City’ recognition would enhance Srinagar’s global identity and reaffirm the prestige of craftsmanship as a valued profession. Sa’ad Hani Al-Qaddumi, President of the World Crafts Council, also extended his congratulations to the Jammu and Kashmir Government, recognizing Srinagar’s well-deserved place among global craft cities. During the ceremony, the LG Shri Manoj Sinha released a publication celebrating the 60-year journey of the World Crafts Council.
