Srinagar, April 26, 2026- In a major boost to the horticulture sector, around 644 tonnes of fresh cherries from Jammu and Kashmir are being transported to Mumbai, marking the beginning of a promising season for cherry growers in the region.
Officials said the large-scale transportation reflects improved logistics, enhanced market access, and rising demand for premium-quality Kashmir cherries in major urban markets. The consignment is being shipped through a combination of road and air cargo to ensure timely delivery while maintaining freshness and quality.
The cherry industry plays a crucial role in the economy of Jammu and Kashmir, providing livelihood to thousands of farmers across key producing districts such as Shopian, Srinagar, Ganderbal, and Baramulla. Favorable weather conditions and early harvesting this season have contributed to better yield and superior fruit quality.
Experts noted that government support measures, along with improved supply chain infrastructure, have significantly strengthened the horticulture sector. The movement of such a large consignment to Mumbai is expected to help farmers secure better returns and further expand market linkages.
Stakeholders have also stressed the importance of scaling up cold storage facilities, improving packaging, and increasing dedicated cargo services to sustain and grow fruit exports from the region.
