July 2025 – Jammu & Kashmir: As the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2025 continues with fervent devotion, the Department of Rural Sanitation, Jammu & Kashmir, has undertaken a massive initiative to ensure cleanliness and hygiene throughout the pilgrimage route. In a significant move, 5613 toilets have been installed at various key locations, with the deployment of over 7,000 sanitation workers dedicated to maintaining a hygienic and safe environment for the pilgrims.
This large-scale sanitation effort has been executed in collaboration with multiple departments, with the primary objective of offering clean, accessible sanitation facilities to the lakhs of yatris making the challenging journey to the holy cave shrine of Baba Barfani. From Baltal and Pahalgam base camps to the higher-altitude halting points, the toilet infrastructure has been designed to function efficiently even under extreme weather conditions.
According to officials from the Rural Sanitation Directorate, the deployment of sanitation personnel round-the-clock is aimed at upholding the sanctity of the yatra and minimising environmental impact in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. In addition, mobile toilets, bio-toilets, and regular waste disposal systems have also been integrated into the overall management plan.
This initiative is part of the UT administration’s broader strategy to ensure that the Amarnath Yatra not only remains a deeply spiritual experience, but also a model of sustainable and organised pilgrimage management.
Pilgrims and local stakeholders have appreciated the efforts of the sanitation teams, acknowledging the visible improvement in facilities and cleanliness along the yatra route.
