Rajouri, August 13,2026- The ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative is giving fresh impetus to traditional pottery in Rajouri, helping local artisans preserve their age-old craft while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.
In Bhatta village of Rajouri, potter Noor Hussain is keeping the traditional art of making earthen utensils alive. For nearly two decades, he has been practising pottery and producing traditional clay products such as kuni, ghada and bugni, which continue to hold cultural significance in the region.
With support from the government, Noor Hussain has expanded his pottery work and is now producing hundreds of clay utensils. His products are receiving a positive response in local markets, providing him with improved opportunities to earn a livelihood through his traditional skills.
Noor Hussain said the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative has helped enhance his production and strengthen his livelihood while also encouraging him to continue preserving a centuries-old craft.
He expressed gratitude to the government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting local artisans, traditional crafts and indigenous products, saying such initiatives can help artisans take their traditional skills to wider markets.
The revival of pottery in Rajouri reflects the broader efforts to promote local craftsmanship and empower artisans by connecting traditional skills with modern market opportunities. Such initiatives not only support rural livelihoods but also help safeguard the cultural heritage of Jammu & Kashmir for future generations.
