Bandipora, October 13, 2025 – The serene shores of Wular Lake, Asia’s second-largest freshwater body, echoed with the rhythmic footsteps of over 3,000 runners from across India as the Border Security Force (BSF) hosted the vibrant Wular Half Marathon 2.0 in Bandipora district. Flagged off under the inspiring theme “Save Wular, Run with Bordermen,” the event blended athletic fervor with a powerful message on environmental stewardship, community harmony, and the promotion of eco-tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.Organized by the BSF Kashmir Frontier in collaboration with the district administration, the marathon drew enthusiastic participants, including a significant number of youth from the Kashmir Valley, who traversed the picturesque 21.1 km half-marathon route, alongside shorter 10 km and 5 km categories. The scenic path winding along the lake’s emerald banks not only tested endurance but also showcased the breathtaking natural beauty of the region, framed by lush hills and tranquil waters.
A Celebration of Health, Heritage, and Harmony
The event commenced with a ceremonial flag-off by senior BSF officials, including Shri Solomon Yash Kumar Minz, IPS, Inspector General (IG) of the Subsidiary Training Centre (STC) BSF Kashmir, and Shri Ashok Yadav, IPS, IG BSF Kashmir Frontier. As runners set off from the BSF Campus in Bandipora, the air buzzed with chants promoting lake conservation and unity. The theme “Save Wular, Run with Bordermen” underscored the marathon’s dual mission: safeguarding the ecologically vital Wular Lake from encroachment and pollution while fostering bonds between security forces and local communities.Wular Lake, a Ramsar-designated wetland and biodiversity hotspot, faces challenges from siltation and urbanization, making conservation efforts like this marathon crucial. Participants, clad in eco-friendly event T-shirts unveiled earlier in a pre-event ceremony, carried placards highlighting the lake’s role in sustaining local livelihoods through fishing and tourism. The race concluded triumphantly at Wular Vantage Park, where Shri Satish S. Khandare, IPS, Additional Director General (ADG) of HQ Special DG (West Command) Chandigarh, presented prizes, certificates, and cash awards to top finishers across categories.
Spotlight on Youth Empowerment and Talent Scouting
Beyond the thrill of the run, the marathon served as a platform for nurturing sporting talent. BSF officials announced that promising athletes identified during the event would receive sponsorship under the Khelo India scheme of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), paving the way for advanced training and opportunities at national and international levels. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to engage Kashmir’s youth in positive, health-focused activities, steering them towards sports and away from socio-political unrest.Local dignitaries, including Deputy Commissioner Indu Chib, who reviewed pre-event arrangements, praised the marathon for boosting community spirit. “Events like this not only promote fitness but also highlight Wular’s untapped tourism potential, with new eco-friendly boulevards enhancing visitor access,” she noted. The free registration model ensured inclusivity, attracting families, fitness enthusiasts, and professional runners alike, while medical teams, hydration stations, and robust security ensured a safe experience for all.
Paving the Way for Sustainable Tourism
The Wular Half Marathon 2.0 builds on the success of its inaugural edition, amplifying calls for sustainable development around the lake. By integrating environmental awareness—such as anti-littering drives and tree-planting pledges—the event positions Bandipora as an emerging hub for adventure and eco-tourism. As one participant remarked, “Running here isn’t just about the miles; it’s about preserving a piece of paradise for generations to come.”With its blend of adrenaline, advocacy, and camaraderie, the marathon reaffirmed the power of sports to unite diverse voices in the pursuit of a greener, more connected Kashmir.
