Kashmir Ahead

20-coach Vande Bharat Express crosses Chenab Rail bridge on Jammu–Srinagar Route | highest rail bridge

Srinagar, May 5,2026 In a landmark moment for rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, the 20-coach Vande Bharat Express operating on the Jammu–Srinagar corridor successfully traversed the iconic Chenab Rail Bridge — the world’s highest railway bridge — marking a significant leap in infrastructure and regional integration.

The upgraded Vande Bharat train, now enhanced from its earlier 8-coach configuration to a 20-coach formation, symbolizes a major boost in passenger capacity and comfort for travelers commuting between Jammu and Srinagar. As it glided over the Chenab River atop the engineering marvel in Reasi district, the train offered a stunning visual of modern India meeting the rugged Himalayan landscape.

The Chenab Rail Bridge, standing approximately 359 meters above the riverbed, is a cornerstone of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. Its completion has been hailed as a historic achievement, overcoming extreme terrain and climatic challenges to connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country via an all-weather rail network.

Officials stated that the expansion to 20 coaches comes in response to growing passenger demand and the need for enhanced connectivity in the region. The Vande Bharat Express is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, improved safety features, and faster travel times, making it a preferred mode of transport for both locals and tourists.

The Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat service is expected to significantly reduce travel time while ensuring a comfortable and reliable journey across one of India’s most scenic yet challenging routes. The development is also seen as a catalyst for tourism, trade, and economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir.

With this milestone, Indian Railways continues to redefine connectivity in the region, bridging distances and bringing new opportunities to the people of Kashmir.
